About the 1541S
The 1541S is the machine most upholstery shops should own first. It is a single needle compound feed flatbed on the 1541 platform: needle, inner foot and feed dog all move the material together, so four layers of vinyl with a welt cord in between feed evenly and the stitch on the back matches the front. The horizontal double capacity hook takes an M bobbin, so you wind half as often as on a standard hook.
The S in the name is the safety clutch. When a needle hits a buckle or a bobbin case jams, the clutch releases instead of bending the hook driver. Push the button under the bed, turn the handwheel, and you are sewing again. On a machine that runs all day in a trim shop that feature pays for itself the first year.
It sews thread from 69 to 138 comfortably and stitches up to 9mm. It is not a saddlery machine: for 207 thread and up, or stacks over 3/8 inch, step up to the 1508NH, the 204-420 or the 441 class.
