Long arm walking foot sewing machines

18 to 30 inches between the needle and the arm for sails, covers and big panels.

A standard industrial head gives you about 10 inches between the needle and the arm. A long arm gives you 18, 20, 25 or 30. That extra room is the difference between fighting a rolled-up boat cover through the throat and simply sewing it. Marine canvas shops, sail lofts, awning makers, tent makers and automotive carpet installers all live on long arms.

Our long arm machines are compound feed walking foot heads with the same big hooks and heavy thread capacity as the flatbed group. Several come with automatic thread trimming, back-tack and air foot lift (the -7 models), and the 8BL series takes thread up to size 415 for the heaviest covers and slings.

Choose this type when

  • Your pieces are wide or long: sails, bimini tops, boat and equipment covers, awnings, truck tarps, tents.
  • You do automotive carpet binding or headliners and need to swing a whole piece under the arm.
  • You quilt or sew large upholstery panels and want fewer repositions.

Typically made on it

  • Sails and sail covers
  • Boat covers, biminis and enclosures
  • Awnings and shade structures
  • Tents, tarps and truck covers
  • Automotive carpet and headliners

Frequently asked questions

Which arm length do I need?

18 inch handles most marine canvas and upholstery. 25 inch is the sail loft and awning standard. 30 inch is for industrial covers and quilted panels. Longer arms cost more and take up more floor, so buy the length your biggest regular job needs, not the biggest you can imagine.

What do the -7 models add?

Automatic thread trimmer, automatic back-tack and a programmable needle position, usually with an air-powered foot lift. On production work they save several seconds per seam and a lot of hand trimming.
