Post bed sewing machines

The sewing point sits up on a post so you can turn and stitch tight, shaped pieces.

A post bed machine raises the needle plate and feed onto a vertical column. Instead of laying work flat you hang it over the post and turn it under the needle. That is how shoe uppers get closed, how a car headrest gets its topstitch, and how the corners of a structured handbag get sewn without a wrinkle.

We stock post beds in several feed types: triple feed walking foot heads for heavy leather topstitching, roller feed heads for footwear, and double needle versions with a split needle bar for parallel decorative seams. Post heights range from the standard 7 inch up to a 17 inch high post for deep work.

Choose this type when

  • You sew footwear, bag bodies, or any piece that has to be rotated under the needle rather than pushed through flat.
  • Decorative topstitching on automotive leather, headrests, steering wheel covers and armrests.
  • You need parallel double rows on curved seams. Look at the 1760L-18 and the 243H-P2.

Typically made on it

  • Shoe and boot uppers
  • Handbag and backpack assembly
  • Car headrests, armrests and shift boots
  • Decorative seams on furniture
  • Caps, gloves and sports equipment

Frequently asked questions

Roller feed or walking foot on a post bed?

Roller feed turns a knurled wheel against the material and is faster around tight shoe curves. Walking foot (triple feed) grips harder and is the choice for thick, layered or slippery leather. We will recommend one once we know what you make.

What is a high post for?

The 17 inch post on the 18365-17 and the 8360BL lets you drop a deep bag, a boot or a case over the post and still reach the seam. If your product is more than seven inches deep, you want a high post.
