Cylinder arm sewing machines

A narrow horizontal arm for tubular, curved and three-dimensional work.

On a cylinder arm machine the bed is a narrow horizontal tube instead of a flat table. You slide a bag, a boot shaft, a sleeve or a saddle skirt over the arm and sew around it, which is impossible on a flatbed. Most of our cylinder arm machines are compound feed walking foot heads, so they handle the same thick leather and layered vinyl as the flatbeds, just in three dimensions.

The group runs from medium-duty binders like the 335VB up to the 441 class, which sews three quarters of an inch of leather with thread up to size 415. If you make holsters, sheaths, saddles, harness, heavy bags or anything else with thick leather and tight curves, this is where to look.

Choose this type when

  • The work is tubular or closed: bag bottoms and corners, boot uppers, cylinder cases, bridles, dog collars.
  • You sew very thick leather or heavy webbing with heavy thread. The 441 class has the hook and the needle bar stroke for it.
  • You need to bind edges on curved pieces. The 335VB with a binder attachment is built for exactly that.

Typically made on it

  • Holsters, sheaths and gun belts
  • Saddles, bridles, harness and halters
  • Boot uppers and shoe repairs
  • Bag corners, gussets and handles
  • Binding on sports pads and bags

Frequently asked questions

Cylinder arm or cylinder bed, is it the same thing?

Yes. Dealers use both names. The important numbers are the arm diameter and length, the foot lift and the thread size the hook can take.

Can I use a cylinder arm machine for flat work too?

Yes. A flat table attachment turns the arm into a small flatbed in a minute. The 1342-7 and the 441 machines are often sold with one, so a small shop can do both kinds of work on one head.

What does the 441 class sew that a 1541 cannot?

The 441 has a much longer needle bar stroke, a huge shuttle hook and a foot lift around 20mm. It sews 3/4 inch of veg-tan leather with 346 or 415 thread without complaint. A 1541 tops out near 3/8 inch and 138 thread.
