Sewing machines for furniture upholstery

A pleated pink upholstery panel being sewn on a SEWPRO long arm walking foot machine

Furniture upholstery lives on the compound feed walking foot machine. Boxed cushions with welt cord, zipper plackets, pleated skirts, tufted headboards, leather club chairs: all of it wants a machine that feeds four layers evenly, sews a long stitch and lets the operator pivot at every corner. Add a double needle for decorative seams and a long arm for sofa backs and mattress covers, and a shop is fully equipped.

Our upholstery machines come set up with a servo motor, a needle positioner and the welt and zipper feet an upholsterer reaches for a hundred times a day. We have equipped furniture shops and reupholsterers in Lancaster County and far beyond, and many of them have bought a second and third machine from us as they grew.

Requirements

What the work demands from the machine

  1. 1

    Welt and piping

The welt seam is the signature of good upholstery. A compound feed machine with a welt foot sews it tight to the cord without the top layer creeping.

  2. 2

    Heavy fabrics and leather

Chenille, velvet, performance fabrics and upholstery leather all need the same thing: a steady feed, a long stitch and the right needle. One machine, set up right, sews all of them.

  3. 3

    Big pieces

A sofa back cover or a mattress cover is a lot of fabric to push through a standard arm. An 18 inch long arm makes the work easier and faster.

  4. 4

    Decorative seams

Double topstitch on cushions and arms sells furniture. A 1560N double needle with a split bar does it in one pass with perfect spacing.

Furniture upholstery: questions we are asked

What is the one machine a reupholstery shop should own?

A compound feed walking foot flatbed with a servo motor and a needle positioner, set up with welt and zipper feet. The 1541S and the 1508NH are the two we sell most to furniture shops.

Can one machine sew both fabric and leather furniture?

Yes. Change the needle and adjust the tension and foot pressure and a 1541S sews leather club chairs as well as it sews chenille sofas. We show you the settings when we deliver.
