Flatbed walking foot sewing machines

The everyday heavy-duty machine. Compound feed, big hook, 9mm stitch.

A flatbed walking foot machine is the workhorse of almost every upholstery and canvas shop. The needle, the inner foot and the feed dogs all move the material together, so three or four layers of vinyl with a welt cord in between feed at the same speed on top and bottom. Nothing shifts, nothing puckers, and the stitch on the back looks like the stitch on the front.

The machines in this group are single-needle lockstitch heads on a flat table. They take 135x17 needles from size 110 to 180, run thread from 46 up to 138 or heavier, and sew a stitch up to 9mm long. Most have a large vertical or horizontal hook so you change bobbins less often, and a safety clutch so a jam does not cost you a hook.

Choose this type when

  • You sew flat or nearly flat panels: seat covers, cushions, tarps, bags before they are closed up, belts, straps.
  • Your material stack is thick but the pieces are not tubular. For boots, bag corners or saddle work look at the cylinder arm group instead.
  • You want one machine that does 80 percent of the shop's work and will still be running in twenty years.

Typically made on it

  • Furniture and automotive seat covers
  • Boat cushions and bimini tops
  • Leather bags, belts and holsters
  • Tarps, awnings and canvas covers
  • Webbing and tie-down straps

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a walking foot and compound feed?

Walking foot usually means the presser foot alternates with a second foot to help pull material. Compound feed (also called unison or triple feed) adds a needle that moves with the material as well. Every machine in this group has compound feed, which is what you want for thick, slippery or layered work.

Do I need a servo motor?

Yes, and every machine we sell comes set up with one. A servo lets you sew one stitch at a time through a thick corner, runs quiet, and uses a fraction of the power of an old clutch motor. We size the motor and the speed reducer to your work.

Which model should I start with?

For a general upholstery shop the 1541S or the 1508NH is the usual answer. For heavier thread and thicker leather step up to the 204-420 or the 733-PRO. Call and describe what you sew and we will tell you straight which one fits.
