About the 243H-P2

The 243H-P2 is the post bed for heavy decorative topstitch. Two 794 needles, triple feed, a large barrel shuttle under each needle, a 12mm stitch and a 20mm foot lift: it sews two rows of 277 or 346 thread across a leather seat bolster or a luggage panel with the long, deep stitch that heavy thread needs, and the barrel shuttle locks it without shredding.

The post is 5.5 inches, the needle gauge is 10 or 12mm, and the top speed is 600 RPM. It runs best with braided or bonded thread from 138 to 415. It is a specialist machine: a shop that sews one row of 138 thread does not need it, but a shop that sews a double row of 277 on every seat has no substitute.

Questions about the 243H-P2

Why barrel shuttles on a post bed?

Because 277 and 346 thread need a shuttle with a long thread path and a big bobbin. Rotary hooks shred thread that heavy. The 243H-P2 is one of the few post beds built this way.

What thread do you recommend?

Braided polyester in 277 or 346 for the best looking topstitch; bonded nylon works too. Needle sizes 200 to 230.
