Sewing machines for webbing, straps, slings and safety gear

A tie-down strap clamped in a SEWPRO programmable pattern sewer

Straps, slings and harness are sewn to a load rating, not to look good. The stitch pattern, the thread size and the stitch count are specified, and every part has to come out the same. That is pattern sewer territory: clamp the webbing, press the pedal, and a Box-X with exactly the programmed stitches comes out in a few seconds, with the thread trimmed. Our heavy-duty pattern sewers are built for seatbelt webbing and 207 to 346 thread rather than for garment labels.

For the rest of the shop, extra heavy-duty flatbed walking foot machines like the 733 and 8BL series sew the long seams, and strap cutters bring rolls of webbing down to the widths you need. We have set up strap and sling manufacturers in Pennsylvania's trucking and agricultural supply trade for years.

Requirements

What the work demands from the machine

  1. 1

    Repeatable patterns

Box-X, W and bartack patterns are stored on the machine and sewn identically every time. The operator only loads the part. Stitch count and thread are what the rating depends on, and a pattern sewer never varies them.

  2. 2

    Heavy webbing and thread

Two layers of 2 inch seatbelt webbing with 277 thread is a normal stack. The pattern sewers and the 733 and 8BL walking foots have the hook, needle and foot lift for it.

  3. 3

    Throughput

A programmable machine with a two-station clamp sews one part while the operator loads the next. Several hundred straps a shift is routine.

  4. 4

    Cutting to width

The AK-20 strap cutter slits webbing and leather up to 14 inches wide and 3/8 inch thick into multiple straps in one pass.

Webbing, straps and safety gear: questions we are asked

Can you program a Box-X pattern to our spec?

Yes. Send us the drawing or a sewn sample with the stitch count and thread size, and the machine is delivered with that pattern loaded and tested on your webbing.

What thread can your pattern sewers run?

The heavy-duty models run bonded nylon or polyester from 138 to 346. The 1900B bartacker runs up to 207.
